Councillor vacancy

Thank you for your interest in joining the council. We currently have one vacancy and have been advised that we are able to fill it by co-option. 

Please find attached a copy of HTC's policy explaining the process for joining the council by co-option. If you decide you would like to apply we will require Appendix A signed and returned along with your resume for consideration. In the meantime you are very welcome to attend any of our Town Council meetings to get a feel for how they run and topics for discussion. The next upcoming agendas can be found on the home page of this website. There is always the option to introduce yourself at the meetings should you wish or you can just listen.

The co-option policy refers to the Code of Conduct and please click on the following link, for this, our Standing Orders and Financial Regulations which are on our website Policies - Hungerford Town Council (hungerford-tc.gov.uk) A calendar of our meetings can also be found on our website. Most meetings usually take place in the Library and are generally held on a Monday evening commencing at 7pm.

To give you an idea of the commitment required –

All councillors meet for Full Council, usually the first Monday of every month and you would also be required to join at least 2 other committees, so attending around 3 meetings a month. There are a variety of committees to choose from and free training is available. Outside of meetings most correspondence is by email but there are also site meetings, civic events and hands on tasks depending on your interest. It is quite a commitment but very rewarding.

Our website aims to inform you about the activities of the Council and to invite your comments.

There are 15 volunteer Councillors who are supported by the Town Clerk's team. Full Council meets every month and there are four main committees and the timetable for these is listed in the calendar. Town issues are actively debated and actions taken to try and make life better for the people of Hungerford.

If you have any concerns or issues please contact a Councillor, or contact the Town Council Office.

The Town Council office is situated in the new Library building with automatic doors and is next to Church Street Car Park which has disabled parking.

ANNOUNCING THE FINAL DESIGN OF OUR  NEW SKATE PARK

Following our public consultation which took place in Dec 2022, we are pleased to  announce we have proceeded with Design A. Your comments were carefully considered and a few tweaks have been made to produce a final design. See attached.  

The Skate Park has been built in place of the existing one. This is a very exciting project for the town. It's a modern facility suitable for bikes, skateboards and scooters and for users of all ages and abilities. We hope you enjoy using it.

Hungerford Neighbourhood Plan

The Neighbourhood Plan is making progress. See the link to our Neighbourhood Plan page for more details. https://www.hungerford-tc.gov.uk/hungerfordNP

The Plan will guide development in the Parish of Hungerford until 2041. It will be used to plan for Hungerford’s future and determine planning applications alongside the West Berkshire Local Plan.

The Plan Vision

Hungerford sits at the heart of the North Wessex Downs AONB and is treasured for being an historic market town set within beautiful and accessible countryside and waterways.

The residents of Hungerford seek to work together to embrace constructive change that ensures a vibrant, robust and sustainable economy that will enhance their prosperity and provide an affordable and nurturing environment for current and future generations.

This should be achieved whilst conserving Hungerford’s natural and manmade heritage and enhancing its strong sense of being a caring community and a fulfilling place to live.

There are chapters in the Plan under the following headings:

• Housing

• Employment and economy

• Getting about

• Leisure, Wellbeing, Public Safety and Learning

• Our heritage

• Climate change and biodiversity

In each of these there are aims, objectives and proposals.

Housing Site Allocation

The Neighbourhood Plan has to allocate sites to deliver a minimum of 55 dwellings to comply with the West Berkshire Emerging Local Plan. If it doesn’t, then the Emerging Local Plan will do this and the community will have less say over which sites are chosen.

After careful and detailed evaluation of many sites around the town several sites have been identified that represent sustainable and deliverable options.

Way Forward

The main next stages for the Plan are:

• Formal six week consultation, early 2025 (complete)

• Public examination, (underway)

• Public referendum on the Plan, winter 2025

The judges were wowed by our stunning green spaces:

• Hungerford Common & The Marsh
• Canals, rivers, parks & community allotments

Special thanks to our community groups including Smarten Up Hungerford, Hungerford Allotment Association (HAHA), St Lawrence’s Church volunteers, Town & Manor, local businesses, and individuals who support the town and to all those who lovingly maintain these spaces for everyone to enjoy.

This award celebrates community spirit, collaboration, and the natural beauty of Hungerford. Let’s keep showing the country what makes our town truly remarkable!
